how long is my Iphone 3gs battery supposed to last? it says usage is 3hours 32minutes, and standby is 17 hours?

so i’m guessing i’ve got about 3.5 hours left on my Phone, but i’m not too sure what the standby means?
also, any tips on saving battery power? i turned off the mail feature and the internet.
i just bought it yesterday and i did let it do a full charge, so if i have to i’ll go get a new battery.

stand by is were the phone is idling ( doing nothing not run any apps in the background) and yes generally around that time with default settings if you turn the brightness a bit down and turn off push notifications and fetch along with 3g and gps you will get around 5-7 hours depends on how lucky you are and how often you use it.
